New Swagelok Training: FK Fittings Essentials

What's the right way to install Swagelok's mechanical-grip FK fittings with heavy-walled tubing? Is their design all that different from cone and thread fittings? A new seminar offers answers, training, and practice. Classes are forming now.

Cone and thread fittings are staple at many Alberta industrial facilities, especially in oil and gas applications. But technicians have their work cut out for them with installation and maintenance. Among other things, cone and thread fittings usually need anti-vibration glands and take extra care to avoid contamination. One tiny oversight, and a cone and thread fitting may soon leak. Leaks waste dollars and create a host of other problems.

Medium-pressure mechanical grip fittings such as Swagelok FK Series fittings provide a simpler and quicker installation process and lower cost of ownership in applications with pressures up to 20 000 psig (1378 bar) and temperatures up 1000°F (537°C). As they become more popular, especially in critical oil and gas, and hydrogen applications, gaining skill in their installation, disassembly, and reassembly is essential.

"Certain medium-pressure fittings can be used nearly anywhere cone and thread fittings are traditionally specified, including chemical injection skids, wellhead control panels, umbilical termination units, hydraulic power systems, and more," explains Swagelok Company's Doug Nordstrom. "When installed per the manufacturer’s instructions, they can offer significant operational benefits and efficiencies."
