New Hub Shows 4 Ways Swagelok Edmonton Supports Alberta Hydrogen Companies

Swagelok Edmonton has a Clean Energy Team that serves the Alberta hydrogen industry. A new information hub summarizes what we offer this thriving sector — from custom fluid system assemblies and expert consulting to components, training and more. The page offers new downloads, demo videos, and customer reviews too.

A growing contingent of Swagelok Edmonton customers work in hydrogen applications, including manufacturing, transportation or storage, and R&D. To rapidly, safely, and profitably scale operations, they need solution providers and suppliers with an advanced understanding of their challenges.

There are plenty of challenges.

"Hydrogen loves to leak because it is such a tiny molecule," said Swagelok Edmonton Field Advisor Tom Webster. "To limit potential leak points, piping and tubing systems should be designed with as few joints as possible and all components must be rated for hydrogen service and the specific operating conditions of the process."

We published access to a Hydrogen-Compatible Swagelok Products guide before, but we have much more to offer than high-quality components. See more of what we offer here:

Hydrogen-Compatible Assemblies_cover (200)One new item you'll find is the Hydrogen-Compatible Fluid System Assemblies Pull Sheet (pictured), which is published by and available only from Swagelok Edmonton.

"We build standardized and custom combinations including gas fill panels that integrate with dispensers, compressors, and fuel lines," explains Swagelok Edmonton's Custom Solutions Lead, Tristian McCallion. Projects include design support, parts, fabrication, assembly, testing, documentation, and installation support.

We use safe, reliable Swagelok components (and additional parts as needed). Our economical designs specify the fewest possible parts and connections. When lead time is short, we work to accelerate your project. Option for final testing using gas, hydrostatic, or helium leak test equipment.

Delivering a fully built, leak-tight custom assembly takes between a couple of days and a few months. "Simple assemblies are a minimum of 2 days, if we have everything in stock," says McCallion. "A simple panel is usually a couple of weeks. A more complex panel can take 3 to 6 months to get all the parts in and build."

Consulting and Onsite for Hydrogen_cover (200)Another new item at the Hydrogen & Clean Energy page is a Consulting & Onsite Services for the Hydrogen Industry pull sheet (pictured).

For hydrogen plants in Edmonton producing fuel, even the smallest components like hoses and fittings play an important role in ensuring safe operations.

"While corrosive media and high-temperature processes are normally associated with refineries and not hydrogen plants, there are still potential hazards to watch out for in hydrogen production," said Webster last July. "High-temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) are two potential hazards that are especially dangerous because of how difficult they can be to detect."

"We are glad to give design advice," he adds. "We can evaluate P&ID’s, CAD models, or sketches to recommend products or advance your design work. We advise on fluids issues in electrolyzers, micro-grids, fuel cells, virtual pipelines (tube trailers), FCEV fuel systems, dispensers and priority panels, refueling station infrastructure, and more."

Regional firms can take advantage of onsite mass spectrometer leak detection; receive expert guidance on how to improve sampling reliability, from process tap to analyzer; get clear, specific recommendations on boosting grab sampling consistency, reliability, and efficiency; gain insight about a gas distribution system's performance; and much more.
