Winterization Advisory Services
Organize preparation with a self-assessment checklist, a suggested schedule, and expert weatherization advice from Swagelok.
Winterizing Checklist for Alberta Pipelines, Refineries, and SAGD
Tackle Winterization with Swagelok Edmonton Support
Sub-zero temperatures in central and northern Alberta can last from October to late May, with temperatures often dropping to -40°F (-40°C) in Fort McMurray. Winterizing fluid systems protects people and assets from cold weather hazards.
Self Assessment
Do this in May or as soon as possible. We recommend using our updated Winterization Checklist, a free download. It is designed to help you think through risk factors, best practices, and opportunities to improve at your facility.
Swagelok Evaluation
Book an onsite evaluation for June or as soon as possible to benefit from Swagelok's winterization expertise. Following a rigorous inspection process, we deliver advice on topics such as insulating, bypass lines, heating, and drains/vents.
Implementation & Tracking
Prep should take place July-September. Your Swagelok report can serve as a road map. It organizes findings and advice by priority level, empowering your team to allocate resources and track progress toward completion.
Winterization Risk Factors
Winterization techniques are especially critical in these cases:
Pour Point
Phase Separation
Ice Formation
Viscosity
Corrosion
Dry Line Moisture
Detail-Rich Reports and Expert Advice
Swagelok Edmonton Field Advisory Services include not only Winterization Advisory Services but also Leak Detection and a dozen other programs. The following examples are related to our Compressed Gas Leak Detection service. We include them here to show the value you can expect to get from reports our Field Advisory Team delivers.
Images with dollar costs
Standard follow-up from an on-site leak detection survey includes a detailed report. Reports include location details, type of gas, distance, leak size (LPM), severity, leak cost (annualized), energy (Kh), and more. Each leak is documented in photos with the Swagelok Field Advisor's observations and notes on root cause.
Example
In the example shown here, we found compressed air leaking at a regulator. By addressing a leaking diaphragm in the regulator, the customer will save $4,642 each year. Elsewhere we found a leak on an air line hose. By resolving that issue, the customer will save $2,503 annually.
Track net savings
In total, we found $37,722 per year worth of leaks on this visit. Repairs require allocating some man-hours and purchasing some parts. The information they need to net substantial savings is now in their hands.
Example
Only compressed air—a seemingly free resource—is leaking in the examples shown, not bottled gasses. Still, running air compressors more than necessary wastes energy. Technicians will likely do more maintenance as a result, which adds labour costs. And unnecessary wear and tear on compressors — high-value assets which may run $150,000+ a piece — carries risk.
Field Advisors deliver insight
We discuss the findings with you and deliver a report packed with detail, empowering you to address the root cause of leaks. Sometimes we can even share observations or tips on things that are outside the scope of a leak detection survey.
Examples
- If we learned that rotating equipment keeps acting up, we may touch on common issues with mechanical seals
- If we suspect a problem with analytical instrumentation, we may touch on common issues with sampling systems
- If the survey turned up incorrectly installed components, we may suggest team training to reduce such errors
